Summer Became Winter

On the west coast, summer turns into winter abruptly. Today my friend and I were talking, and we both marveled at how not long ago it felt like summer, and then only a few days later, it was suddenly cold, and very clearly winter. Looking through my recent photo sets, it was easy for me to identify the set that captured the in-between moment of summer and winter for this year. On that particular day, Suzanne and I had decided to meet up and take the dogs for a beach outing. It was fairly warm out, but overcast, and with on-and-off rain.

As Miles and I waited in the parking lot for Suzanne and Axel to arrive, Miles noticed one of his greatest fears: a drone.

Miles is completely terrified of drones.

Soon enough, Suz and Axel arrived, and we set out for the beach. Miles was ecstatic to run around on the sand and to chase Axel; Axel was excited to play fetch.

Axel worries when he drops the ball — “Oh no! Miles might get my ball!” — but he never seems to realize that Miles only cares about chasing HIM, not the ball!

Miles wandered off, and looked for new friends.

He greeted a Jack Russel terrier, but she was too busy playing fetch. On the other side, Axel was still focused on doing the same thing– playing fetch.

Then he met a cute Border terrier, but, again, she was too busy playing fetch.

Then things started looking up! First, he met a Basenji.

Then, he found the right playmate! He met a Golden Retriever, who wanted to play!

After the satisfying play session with the Golden Retriever, Miles wandered back to see what Suz & Axel were doing. Not surprisingly, they were still playing fetch! Axel lives for fetch!

Everyone left happy. Suz and I got in one final beach walk for 2015, Axel got to play lots of fetch, and Miles got to run around and meet new friends.

Wow, these are amazing pictures! Especially when Miles is running with the golden retriever. Do you see a lot of drones? I can’t say as I have ever seen one, and certainly Oliver hasn’t noticed any. I still think you are so fortunate to live by the beach all the time. Oliver would be so happy.
For once here, I feel like we are actually getting fall before we skip right to winter. It hasn’t been as cold as usual and no snow yet. Today it was 13 degrees when I woke up – almost unheard of for late November!!

This summer I saw a lot of drones in public areas. People using them recreationally. One time I was getting really irritated by a particularly big one buzzing around, and then I realized the people operating it were my classmates from university! How random.

I can’t believe it is colder on the west coast than it is on the east coast!! Its been freezing every night here for a while now.

Em, gotta say, Sally is very like Miles… She does not even want the ball… She wants to play chase! Sometimes she meets friends who are like the Golden Retriever … Who will just run and chase with her. Chester is the Axel-ball-dog… But both of them would love to run on the beaches that you and Miles have. Lovely! We have had a nice, pleasant, long Fall, that has been warm in the daytime and cool at night, but very pleasant and rare… We’ve enjoyed it immensely! Love your pics! Feel like I’m there! Love you, Darcy, Chester and Sally

Sounds like Sally and Miles are two peas in a pod, they’d get along great! Does Chester ever chase Sally? That’ll be the true test of whether he’s Axel’s matching pea in the pod, haha. Axel loves Miles, and tolerates his chasing, but finds it irritating at times. Miles is like me, he’s the older (half) sibling, but he is the goofy one!

Your fall sounds really nice. It was such a fast change here. I am still adjusting! So chilly! Half the time I am going out underdressed, meanwhile Miles is bundled up. I should follow his lead…
