Duckfeet for the Dog People

In 2019 I wrote an article about waterproof sneakers which won an award for “best dog product review on a blog.” When I entered the award I wasn’t sure other dog people would feel as strongly as I do about good footwear for the dog person experience. And as far as the award was concerned, human shoes aren’t technically dog products. Was I ever surprised by the response I got, both winning the award and receiving lots of positive feedback from dog people. Clearly, footwear that is good-looking and functional matters a lot to us dog people!

I have high functional demands for all of my clothing, but especially for my footwear. My shoes have got to be “out of the box adventure ready” without any wear-in time. Last year a big goal for me became finding boots that could function basically as outdoor slippers and work as rain boots, summer morning and evening boots, winter boots, and boots that are as simple to slip on as rainboots but without the clunkiness, lack of breathability, or associated shinsplints. I tried several brands and one brand came out as the winner!

Last year by chance I came across Duckfeet. The Danish company has been around for 40 years, and many customers have shared photos of their decades old Duckfeet still in action. When I found the company I had a hunch I had discovered a special find, and I was right.

Over the last few months I have tested two pairs of Duckfeet boots at the beach, the woods, the muddy park, and on neighborhood walks. I have also ended up being guilty of wearing my outdoor boots indoors… They are just so comfy! One thing I worried about by choosing the fleece-lined models was that my feet would get too hot. That is where sheepskin and leather are miraculous materials: they warm you when needed, and they are breathable and forgiving in any weather. I won’t be putting these away in the summer, and I can’t wait to wear them on sunset beach nights. To have that snuggly feel in a functional and good-looking outdoor boot is a little fantasy come true!

I am also very happy to support small companies who really build their products “for life.”

Boots Shown:

  • Taller boots – Duckfeet “Silkeborg” (above)
  • Shorter boots – Duckfeet “Århus” (below)
  • Canadians, there is also a Canadian Duckfeet website

Cleaning and caring for Duckfeet is really simple… And Miles finds the process very relaxing. Ideally it is done after a hike and when your dog is lazily sunbathing on a comfy rug. I call this video “Sleepy Boots”… 💤💤💤🥾

Great review of a terrific boot. I love your video and all the photos, which give wonderful perspective from all the angles, but the one of you and Miles on the beach at sunset is iconic, simply stunning! 💫 Kisses for Miles. ❤️

Aww thanks Denise. I think you’d love a pair, they are ridiculously comfortable. The Danish really understand design and function.

Thank you for your kind remark about the sunset shot! Given your photography knowledge allow me to geek out a little here… I haven’t gotten a remote for my camera yet, so I am so proud of that shot because it involved a 70mm lens on 10 second auto shoot and me and Miles rushing down the slippery sand and then sea-soaked rocks fast and then interacting, all with the settings perfectly aligned. Plus, I had to defend my spot at the sunset beach overlooking the city skyline from a hipster who came onto the scene midway through who wanted to start shooting his model right where my tripod was set up! Anyway, I wish you could come and watch the sunset with us at the beach, it is so relaxing. Someday?

Your photography blows my mind! It is indeed really hard to find comfortable, beautiful boots, and warm, also? Fabulous.

These look so comfortable! I love that they’re several steps up in terms of fashionability compared to typical rainboots, which you mentioned. These look like they move with you too, which I know is so important when outside and being active with our pups!

I absolutely agree! The other downside to rainboots is they give me horrible shinsplints. My grandmother if she were still with us would be really impressed that a fashionable boot could outdo a function-only boot for practicality! I wish I could show her. 🙂 Thank you for the comment, Stephanie!

I love the video and these look like great boots. I also love how you product test things for us so we don’t have to! It saves a lot of trial and error 🙂
