Miles & Vasco Hit the Beach!

Life seaside is magical. In the winter and spring, the shore can be very cold and windy, but Miles and I love to hop in the car in the evening, and join the crabbers to watch the sunset. In the summer and fall I track the tides and we head out to the beach when the water drains from the inlet. Tides vary, but can be predictably tracked about 14 days ahead of time. Recently, we went to low tide with Vasco and Sage the Portuguese Water Dogs. Vasco competes in agility like Miles, and Sage lives a life of leisure after being rescued a few years ago from a famous puppy mill crack down.

Handsome Vasco.

Sweet Sage.

Wild Miles, of course!

When Miles first hits the beach, he tries to meet as many new friends as he can. I thought it was funny to see two pairs of different kinds of black & tans together.

Miles, left in the dust. Or water in this case. The biggest disadvantage of being little at low tide is your bigger friends can run in much deeper water!

Miles said Hi to a Basenji.

“I like you!”

Two beach bums. With the initial meet & greet over, Miles headed back to the pack. He joined Sage and they sniffed the beach for crabs. Yum…

Vasco, meanwhile, was being handsome.

And playing ball!

{ Contemplative }

The city view

As we approached the wave point, the dogs decided it was time to PLAY.

Miles did a bit of chase with Sage.

And checked in with her to make sure his chasing was ok.

Then, it was time for boys to go buck wild!

Vasco wasn’t sure what the heck all of the growling was about at first. Turns out, this is how terriers play!

Vasco wondered if Miles wanted to steal his ball. Miles hopped and barked and bowed and did everything in his repertoire to say “I wanna play with YOU!”

One last springy bounce, and Vasco got the hang of a terrier!

Boing! “Watch out for sand in the eyes!”

Vasco realized, “wow, terriers are nutjobs. But he really does just want to play!”

And they hopped!

The collided!

Miles did laps around Vasco!

Vasco ran away, “chase me!”

Wee hee!! And they both ran!!

They grinned and made people laugh…

When the play got really intense, they had to close their eyes to avoid the flying sand!

Vasco decided terriers are pretty fun!

And then all of the sudden…

And then, it was over. Whew!

How bromances are made.

We headed back to the green land.

What do you think Miles? Did Miles enjoy the company of two very sweet Portuguese Water Dogs?

YES!!!

Everything time I see photos of this place, I wish I could go as often as possible with George. He would have so much fun running and making new friends, human (especially if they have treats in their pockets) and from the doggie nation. And, I would love for George to meet you and Miles! Wish it wasn’t such a long plane ride for him to get there, but we might try one day. Is the beach area relatively “contained” space in that George would feel compelled to stay close instead of running off? We practice recall, and he typically comes straight away (fortunate the boy is treat motivated!!), but with a new Welsh Terrier still under training who we only let off lead in a fenced dog park, you never know. Merry, Happy holidays to you and your family, and Miles!!!

What awesome photos! I’m always so jealous that you have dog friendly beaches like that around you. These photos make me wish I’d been there to see it – their poses are so expressive that the story almost plays out like a movie. What fun!!!
