The Big New Yorker Book of Dogs
When I was a kid, my parents got me one of these compilations of New Yorker Magazine dog-themed cartoons and essays. This is a pretty-much fail-proof gift for absolutely anyone that you know who loves dogs. The perfect coffee-table book, sure to amuse all… Even guests who do not, *gasp,* love dogs!
Dogsbody
by Diana Wynne Jones
Never before or since have I read a book from a dog’s perspective that I have found so satisfying. This young adult novel is a fantastic book for any age of person. I really can’t say more — you just have to dive in.
The Spirit of the Dog: An Illustrated History by Tamsin Pickeral
A lovely coffee-table book about dogs, with gorgeous photography, and interesting historical facts about a select assortment of breeds. This book sheds light on specific types of dogs, and allows us to appreciate our modern canine companions just a little better (than we already do…).
One of the best books my mother has read about the animal-human bond. I cannot wait to take her up on this recommendation. My mum is an extreme bookworm, so, when she raves about a book, and goes back to read it multiple times, I just know it is truly outstanding. This book covers history, biology, and so much more. From what my mum has said, it sounds like it is truly a must-have book for any inquisitive animal lover.
Capyboppy
by Bill Peet
This is the only book on our “best dog books list” that is actually not about dogs! But, it is not a book to be missed by the dog-loving-demographic, and despite being a children’s book, it is also a book that is timeless, as well as ageless. Any age of person who loves animals will love this book — dearly. This is the sort of book that will be a cherished gift, and memory, for anyone who receives it as a gift.
Animals in Translation: Using the Mysteries of Autism to Decode Animal Behavior by Temple Grandin and Catherine Johnson
A seminal and fascinating read for anyone who is interested in animal behavior. Temple Grandin is one of my biggest personal inspirations. I have met her a few times, and think she is fantastic all around. Also check out the second book in this series, or gift it to someone who loved the first: Animals Make Us Human: Creating the Best Life for Animals
.
This is also a great book for dog (and humor!) lovers

You should read A Dog's Purpose and A Dog's Journey by W. Bruce Cameron. The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein is also a great read.
Fantastic tip! I love dogs with old man faces… That is what this blog celebrates! 😉
Thank you for the tips Anth. I read the summary of A Dog's Purpose, and it sounds a bit like DogsBody! Have you read it?
